The Atlantic tarpon inhabits coastal waters and estuaries. The range in the Eastern Atlantic extends from Senegal to the Congo. In the Western Atlantic, the fish primarily inhabit Florida, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Tarpon have been found at the Pacific terminus of the Panama Canal; there the fish propagate and are caught around Coiba Island. Tarpon prefer flat coastal waters, bays and mangrove-lined lagoons. This saltwater fish can tolerate sweet water environments and often enters river mouths. Tarpon can also tolerate oxygen-poor environments: The fish audibly inhale atmospheric oxygen by way of a modified air bladder. The only variable that limits their choice of habitat is temperature: Rapid-flow related decreases in temperature have been known to cause large tarpon kills. 127
