The now endangered fish can be found worldwide from 67° N to 54° S. It generally prefers sub-tropical waters, but also moves through tropical zones. Its temperature tolerance covers a huge range between 7-26° C. The shark can be found near the coastline, as well as on the high seas. Preferred hunting grounds and nurseries are located in the Indo-Pacific off California (Monterey Bay, Farallon Islands), the Mexican peninsula, South Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the east coast of South Africa (False Bay up to Kwazulu-Natal). In the Atlantic Ocean, these include the Mid-Atlantic Bay (New England states of the USA) and in the Mediterranean the Adriatic and the region between western Sicily and Tunisia. The back and flanks vary according to region, from olive brown (Mediterranean Sea), to gray, blue gray up to light gray. The color on the lower flanks changes seamlessly into a lighter shade of white. The eyes are large and black. The pectoral fin and first dorsal fin are comparatively long. 35
