Because of this remarkable run at the start of the season, good skippers Olaf "Grimml" Grimkowski, Marty Bates, Zak Conde, Matthias Henning and others come up with an impressive annual balance sheet of more than one marlin per fishing day. The islands have been among the world's best spots for marlin fishing, ranking in at number one of the Billfish Reports (Fish Monsters Magazine) for 2012. The Cape Verde season ranges from late March until the end of September. Mid-April to the end of May are the most plentiful months for fish. Starting in July, the marlin become less but are far larger. A the beginning of the season, their weight usually runs between 150 and 350 lbs., later increasing to over 500 lbs. during the course of the year. Sixty fish topped the 500 lb. mark in 2012. The starting point for the trips is usually the island of Sao Vicente located in northwest with the port city of Mindelo acting as a base. Due to the constantly shifting winds, the Atlantic is mostly choppy and rough. Sensitive individuals should therefore stock up on seasickness medication before embarking on their journey. © I. M.
