LA GOMERA The new hotspot of the Canary Islands. Since the late 1990's, a very nice marina can be found in San Sebastian. At the beginning of 2000, the waters around the island were practically unfished. Since word got out about how good the catches are there, boats from all the Canary Islands head over to La Gomera during the top months of July and August. Two blue marlin per boat and day are not uncommon then. Fishing starts immediately after leaving the port at a distance of about 2 miles. Extremely calm seas are an added bonus. Not only the number of blues is remarkable, the excellent average weight of 400 lbs. is also noteworthy. The season usually starts at the end of February with the fishing for bluefin tuna from 300 up to 900 pounds. April and May are the best months for bluefin which are often accompanied by bigeyes and albacore. Yellowfin can start showing up from July onward. Blue marlin are fished from May to mid-October. Their average weight is around 500 lbs. In addition, regular white marlin, spearfish, dorado and wahoo are caught. © S.
