The average weight of the sails is about 25 kg. Fishing takes place less than two miles from the shore; dorado, wahoo and yellowfin tuna count as by-catch. The ocean is usually calm there, as the island is protected by mountains located in the east. January to March has storms and rain and is thus "off season". North around Cap d'Ambre and Baie du Courrier in the northeast is one of the best destinations any where in the world for fishing with poppers and jigs. The area with countless islets, reefs, underwater banks and strong maelstroms magically attracts big fish. The records for poppers: a GT with 63 kg, 63 kg dogtooth tuna, 90 kg shark or marlin at 252 kg, 42 kg yellowfin tuna, 50 kilograms sailfish and 32 kg barracuda. The fishing season on the northwest coast is limited to the months of April-May and October – November. On the northeast coast, on the other hand, fishing is from December to April.
